Presentation from FUTURING at Workshop “Digital Manufacturing Platforms for Connected Smart Factories” held in Brussels on 19 October 2017

Dr. Konstantinos Georgoulias (LMS) was invited to give a presentation on the topic “Sustainable Value Networks: Manufacturing in a Circular Economy” during the workshop “Digital Manufacturing Platforms for Connected Smart Factories” that took place in Brussels on 19 October 2017. The workshop was organised by the European Commission CONNECT Unit “Technologies and Systems for Digitising Industry” and the European Factories of the Future Research Association (EFFRA).

In order to investigate the role of platforms towards Circular Economy, the presentation investigated three main types of digital manufacturing platforms that can be identified within the value chain, i.e. Manufacturing Networks (usually addressing the whole product life), Factory Shop-Floor (usually addressing manufacturing and maintenance) and Product-Service (usually addressing product use and after-use phase).

More than 50 (est.) participants of the workshop attended the presentation. The intervention took place during the session “Grand challenges and future digital manufacturing platforms”, where among others different company strategies that may lead to needs for different manufacturing platforms were discussed. For example, the four Grand Challenges identified in EFFRA’s recommendations for the H2020 Work Programme 2018-20 (see document “Factories 4.0 and Beyond” on the EFFRA website) may result in different platforms, pilots, applications, and standards.
